What is the definition of a Drum Loop?

A Drum Loop is a two to sixteen bar phrase of real drums being played by live drummers, usually digitally recorded. These recordings initially were taken right off of CDs, where the drums were playing without other instruments. The basic purpose of the drum loop is to introduce the live sound and real feel of real drums that are usually missing from drum machines.

Drum Loops are then repeated or looped to create the illusion of a continuous drum track. Because of the repitition drum loops can impart a distinct rhythmic signature in the foundation of a piece of music. That is why more and more musicians are using them to construct the foundations of their compositions.

In order to use the drum loops you must have a CD with license free loops on it, a CD player and a Sampler.

Record the loop of your choice into your sampler and truncate it to the desired length.
Assign a trigger note to the sample.
Set the sample so that it stops playing when you release the key on the keyboard, i.e. no release time.
Record the trigger note into the sequencer - hold the key down for the desired length.
Set the sequencer to cycle for the length of the loop and set the tempo listed in the manual.
Copy this trigger note around the song as needed.
It is better to re-trigger a Drum Loop using notes, tempo and a sequencer than to loop it within the sampler itself. As a rule, don't bother looping drum loops.
